Willie and Eloise Root Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Willie and Eloise Root Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 by Louise Van Vliet to honor the memory of these migrant workers whom she met and became friends with one summer while she was working at an apple orchard. Students must plan to pursue a degree from an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or technical school in the state of Ohio, have a minimum 2.5 GPA or have successfully completed a GED, and demonstrate financial need.

This scholarship is for two groups of people:

  • A migrant worker, a child of a migrant worker, or a high school senior or currently enrolled college student who can demonstrate an active role in the lives of migrant workers OR
  • A victim of human trafficking, a child of someone who is a victim of human trafficking, or a high school senior or currently enrolled college student who can demonstrate an active role in activism against human trafficking
