PFLAG Dayton LGBTQ and Ally Scholarship

PFLAG Dayton envisions a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. PFLAG is a national organization with more than 400 chapters and their mission is to support, educate and advocate for families, allies and people who are LGBTQ+. The PFLAG Dayton LGBTQ+ and Ally Scholarship was established with the Dayton Foundation in 2021 to offer scholarships to assist outstanding students in the Miami Valley pursue their education at an accredited college or vocational institution. The LGBT Center of Dayton (daytonlgbtcenter.org) generously supports one of the scholarships offered. The LGBT Center’s mission is to enhance lives and empower members of the diverse sexual and gender communities throughout the Miami Valley. This scholarship is designed to celebrate the achievement of the individuals who represent PFLAG and the LGBT Center values. Scholarship recipients will be required to attend the PFLAG awards event to accept the scholarship. Applicants must:

  • All applicants must be seventeen (17) years or older by the application deadline
  • Be a graduate of a high school in the Miami Valley
  • Be accepted to or currently attending an accredited two-or four-year college, university or trade school for at least 9 credits per semester
  • Demonstrate participation and leadership in community activities with integrity and honesty
  • To foster a positive image of LGBTQ+ people and their allies, applicants should be involved in at least one of the following: Be actively involved in a campus or community based LGBTQ+ or related organization OR
  • Be a volunteer in LGBTQ+ or AIDS/HIV organization or Be an advocate on issues related to LGBTQ+ people

  1. Submit a short essay describing your goals in seeking higher education, how you hope to make the best of your skills, and your long-term career goals.
  2. Submit an essay describing how you deal with society’s generally negative view of sexual orientation and gender identity. Specifically elaborate on what you have done, as either a LGBTQ+ person or straight ally, to present a positive image of sexual orientation and/or identity issues.
